Permitted and Prohibited Items at NYRR Events
PERMITTED ITEMS
Below are lists of items that are generally permitted and those that are generally prohibited from NYRR events. Note that any items brought to the secured areas of NYRR events are subject to search and whether they are allowed will be subject to the discretion of law enforcement at the event.
The following items are permitted at NYRR events:
- Additional articles of clothing may be worn during the race so long as the additional items comply with the prohibited items
- At certain NYRR events, extra clothing that is discarded on the racecourse or in corrals will be collected and donated
- Types of bags permitted on course—only one bag per participant—to carry food, hydration bottles of 1 liter or less, medicine, identification, phone, keys, and similar necessary small items. Please note: Bags including hydration vests or fueling belts especially those containing water or electronics, must not cover the runner’s bib.
- Small waist pack/belt bag (see acceptable example)
- Fuel belt with bottles of 1 liter or less (see acceptable example)
- Hydration vest with front bottles of 1 liter or less (and without rear bladders—if your vest allows for both water bottles and a bladder/water reservoir, you may only use the bottles, and they must be in the front pockets of the vest. You should not fill the bladder or water reservoir at any point before or during the event (see acceptable example))
- Armband, which can carry a bottle of 1 liter or less (see acceptable example) or a mobile phone (see acceptable example)
- Type of bag permitted at bag check
- Clear plastic bags, smaller than an NYRR clear bag or a clear, reusable plastic bag no larger than is 17’’ wide x 20’’ high x 4’’ deep or smaller (putting a backpack or other type of prohibited bag inside the clear plastic bag is not allowed)
PERMITTED BUT DISCOURAGED
Athletes in the invited professional fields of NYRR races must follow the applicable Governing Bodies’ prohibitions against the use of mobile phones, cameras, video recorders, radios, radio transmitters, and similar devices. For all other race participants, NYRR discourages the use of any such devices on course. Participants may only use such devices in compliance with the Mobile Phone, Camera, and Content Capture Policy in the Rules of Competition. If a participant uses such a device in a manner that poses a safety hazard, interferes with another person’s participation in the event, or otherwise violates NYRR’s Mobile Phone, Camera, and Content Capture Policy, the participant may be subject to disqualification, suspension from future NYRR events, and/or other penalties.

PROHIBITED ITEMS
- Alcoholic beverages and illegal substances of any kind
- Animals (If you are a person with a disability, please contact accessibility@nyrr.org)
- Bags on course—any bag other than the bags listed under Permitted Items is prohibited, including but not limited to:
- Hydration backpacks or vests with bladders or water reservoirs in the back Fluid containers larger than one liter, including hydration systems, vests, or belts
- Backpacks, handbags, or any similar item carried over the shoulder of any size
- Bags at baggage check—any bag other than the bags listed under Permitted Items is prohibited, including but not limited to:
- Opaque bags or non-transparent plastic bags
- Suitcases and rolling bags
- Bicycles, roller skates, rollerblades, scooters, skateboards, strollers, or other unauthorized wheeled devices**
- Certain containers
- Coolers, any container capable of carrying more than one liter of liquid
- Glass containers
- Cigarettes, tobacco and tobacco products, cannabis and cannabis products, vaping devices, and other electronic smoking devices
- Costumes covering the face or any non-form fitting outfits extending beyond the perimeter of the body
- Duvets, sleeping bags, and large blankets or comforters
- Folding chairs and tables of any kind
- Guns, knives, poles, sticks, or any item that may be used as a weapon
- Sharp or blunt objects, including umbrellas, poles, sticks (including any selfie sticks), or hammers
- Props (including sports equipment, military and fire gear, signs or flags larger than 11”x17”)
- Flagpoles
- Flammable liquids, aerosols, fuels, fireworks, toxic chemicals, and explosives
- Mattresses
- Portable speaker(s)
- Tents and free-standing structures
- Video cameras*
- Weights of any kind, including weighted vests
*ACTION CAMERAS & UNAUTHORIZED CONTENT CAPTURE
Video cameras (other than mobile phones, GoPros, or similar-sized cameras—see the Mobile Phone, Cameras, and Content Capture Policy in the Rules of Competition), computers, drones, aerial devices, or any similar device to capture content on or near the course are strictly prohibited.
**UNAUTHORIZED WHEELED DEVICES OR EQUIPMENT
The use of wheeled devices by participants or any other person authorized to be on the course is strictly limited to: (1) authorized law enforcement on bicycles; (2) credentialed bicycles related to event operations; and (3) authorized and registered AWD participants (e.g., wheelchair, handcycle, and duo team participants). Participants with a disability who wish to use a device that is otherwise prohibited, must contact accessibility@nyrr.org to request reasonable accommodations. Accommodation requests will be reviewed and decided on a case-by-case basis.
UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS
Any registered participant who permits an unregistered person on the course for any part of the event for any purpose (including but not limited to filming, content capture, advertising, coaching, pacing, or other assistance [see Assistance Rule]) may be disqualified.
