DISCOVER ALL OF RISING NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERSThe History of the RBC Brooklyn Half
The Brooklyn Half has been on the New York Road Runners annual calendar since 1981. In most of the early years the race was run entirely in Brooklyn's Prospect Park over a series of challenging hills. The course has changed significantly since then, and even started in Coney Island in the 1990s.
Like Mother, Like Daughter
The (big) apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Just ask mother-daughter duo Perry and Abigail Shoemaker. Mom, Perry, qualified for the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials when she was 48 years old. Her eldest daughter, New Yorker and Dashing Whippets runner Abigail, 26, qualified for the 2028 Trials earlier this year. They’re in a rare situation in which both truly know what it’s like to train and compete at the upper echelon of distance running.
NYC Runners on Culture, Community, and Joy Ahead of the RBC Brooklyn Half
In celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, these NYC runners share their stories of identity, resilience, and representation as they prepare for the RBC Brooklyn Half on May 16. Together, they show how the sport creates space for belonging, purpose, and inspiration both on and off the course.

NYRR Celebrates Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month
May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, a time to reflect and celebrate the histories, cultures, and important role Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders have played in the United States. At NYRR, this month we look at AANHPI representation in the running community and tell stories of AANHPI runners and groups.
