Amy L. Ortiz

  • Group Training

Amy L. Ortiz has been a passionate runner since middle school, starting as a sprinter and evolving into a long-distance runner. Based in the Bronx since 2006, Amy found running to be a source of community, representation, and joy. Initially running for all the wrong reasons, she eventually discovered that what truly mattered was the connection and sense of belonging it provided, especially in the Bronx.

Through solo runs during the pandemic and as a pacer and ambassador, Amy has championed the idea that running is for everyone, regardless of body type or background. She is deeply committed to creating visibility and representation in the running world, inspiring others to see themselves as runners. For Amy, running is more than a physical activity; it’s a way to root herself in her community, breathe, reflect, and find joy, even on life’s toughest days.

What program do you coach?

I am new to coaching and part of the Game Changers NYC cohort

How would you describe your coaching style?

My coaching style is all about encouragement and celebration. Like a pacer, I help athletes see what they’ve accomplished and remind them that they’re capable of hard things. I believe in giving yourself grace, being proud of how far you’ve come, and most importantly, having fun along the way.

What is your proudest coaching moment?

My proudest moments as a pacer and coach are watching the athletes I’ve guided for 16 weeks cross the finish line and achieve their goal of becoming marathoners.

What is your favorite workout to coach and why?

My favorite workout to coach is the Yasso 800s because they clearly show athletes what they’re capable of. I love seeing runners realize they can do hard things‚ like hitting their goal pace‚ and gaining confidence along the way.

How many years have you been coaching?

I’ve been pacing for 2 years and this is my first year coaching.

Please list any awards, achievements, or certifications below. This can be sports and/or coaching certifications.
