Dickie Reinicke: “I'm So Proud to Be Among Other Really Great Nonbinary Runners”

To continue our celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month we’re spotlighting nonbinary runner Dickie Reinicke, who ran their first NYRR race in the nonbinary division at the RBC Brooklyn Half and won in 1:18:17. Dickie moved to New York a year and a half ago and joined Brooklyn Track Club as a way to meet people and get integrated into the NYC running community.

“I'm so proud to be among other really great nonbinary runners making our way in the sport,” they said. “Being able to run in the nonbinary category at NYRR races means that I can be part of the sport that I love without compromising a big part of who I am.”

Dickie's glad that, culturally, there is starting to be more recognition and acceptance that only having men's and women's categories excludes a lot of people.

“If you're a cis person who doesn't totally understand why it would be so important, just remember it's not for you. You kinda don't have to get it for it to be meaningful,” they said.

When asked what race organizers can do to be more inclusive to LGBTQ+ runners they said, “Races can ask for pronouns on registration (especially important if you're going to announce as people cross the finish line). I’d also love a way to be able to tell during a race who is in which category, maybe giving everyone a back bib in a certain color.”

Recently, Dickie met someone at a run club who said that Dickie was the first nonbinary person they'd knowingly interacted with. It's moments like these that leave room for open dialogue. 

"If your intentions are good I’m more than happy to share about my experiences. We’re in a time in the U.S. where having each other's backs is glaringly critical, and the communities we build through running can be an important part of creating the networks of care we need!"
