Rising NYRR Mom Evelyn Flores Says Running Encourages Her Son to Explore the Outside World

For Evelyn Flores, running has become more than just exercise—it's a family tradition that brings her closer to her children while breaking down barriers in the running community.

Living in Sunnyside, Queens with her fiancé and their two sons, Evelyn discovered Rising New York Road Runners through her friend Jaqueline who was signing up her own son Levi. Together, they attended their first event together, marking the start of something she cherishes.

Evelyn’s older son, 6-year-old Jayce, has already participated in approximately 15 Rising NYRR events. His enthusiasm is infectious—he gets excited about receiving his bib and practices running the night before each race. He asks his mom from time to time if he has any events coming up. “He's always looking forward to running," Evelyn said. She plans to have Jayce participate in the TCS New York City Marathon Kids Kickoff on October 26.

Evelyn shares their running journey on Instagram, regularly posting about Rising NYRR events. She brings her 9-month-old son, Kai, along in a stroller, already looking forward to when he turns 2 and can participate alongside his big brother.

Growing up in a Mexican household in Astoria where soccer dominated, Evelyn says running wasn't initially on her family's radar. While she and her fiancé ran casually in their younger years, they never participated in official races. Now, inspired by her son's excitement for the sport, Evelyn dreams of one day running a marathon herself.

What draws Evelyn most to these events is watching Jayce stay active, away from screens, enjoying the outdoors, and experiencing the outside world. The bibs and medals serve as encouragement that keeps him motivated.

After each event, the family has developed a special tradition—getting bagels and making a whole day out of their park visit. It's these moments that make the experience truly special.

She loves seeing people from different cultures come together at events, creating an inclusive community where families like hers can thrive. Evelyn also appreciates the fact that because the events are free, they are accessible to everyone.
