NYRR was founded as the Road Runners Club – New York Association in 1958 at Macombs Dam Park in the Bronx. Our first race was a 6-mile cross country event in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and many other early races took place through the neighborhoods around Yankee Stadium. Learn more about our early history.

The New Balance Bronx 10 Mile finishes near the Joseph Yancey Track, named after the founder of the New York Pioneer Club, an interracial club that featured many elite runners, including NYRR's first president, Ted Corbitt.

The Bronx Today

The Bronx is a vibrant borough with a diverse population. The borough has historically faced significant health disparities, and for the 16th consecutive year was named the least healthy county in New York state in 2024 by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s County Health Rankings and Roadmaps. The report found that 23% of Bronx adults are in fair or poor health, 35% of Bronx adults are obese, and 35% of Bronx children live in poverty.

A 2022 New York City Community Health Survey found that only 65.5% of Bronx adults had exercised in the last 30 days, the lowest percentage of reported exercise across the five boroughs and in contrast to Manhattan, where 81.7% of adults reported exercising within the last 30 days.

The Bronx community is actively involved in New York Road Runners' free and accessible programming, races, and events throughout the year. Our premier event in the borough, the New Balance Bronx 10 Mile, has been in existence since 2012, evolving from what used to be the Bronx Half Marathon, first held in 1995. It pays homage to the Bronx and our founding in 1958 at Macombs Dam Park. A breakdown of New York Road Runners' impact in the Bronx:

  • 12,000+ Rising New York Road Runners in the 2024-2025 school year
  • 100+ Open Runners across 2 parks in the Bronx: Soundview Park and St. Mary's Park
  • 100+ Race Free members from the Bronx
  • 30+ Striders across 3 Bronx sites: PSS Highbridge Senior Services Center, RAIN Parkchester Senior Center, and Kips Bay Castle Hill Senior Center
  • 1,500+ NYRR members reside in the Bronx
  • 3,372 runners from the Bronx at NYRR races in 2024

New Balance Bronx 10 Mile Post-Race Block Party

New this year, NYRR will offer an expanded post-race festival, taking place beneath the 161th Street-Yankee Stadium train station, to celebrate New Balance Bronx 10 Mile finishers. The festival will feature a New Balance activation that includes branded photo moments and opportunities to connect with local Bronx Burners Run Club; a CookUnity food truck with free samples for race participants; a live cover band; family-friendly games and activities; opportunities to engage with local bars and restaurants, and more.
