9+1 Passholder Race Selection Process

Complete Your 9+1 Journey with More Confidence

To make planning the 9+1 year easier, two weeks prior to quarterly race registration launch, all 9+1 Passholders will have access to a race selection survey that provides additional support to gain entry into select NYRR races throughout the year.

How It Works

Step 1: Receive Your Weekly Race Entry Survey

Approximately two weeks before each quarterly race registration launch, 9+1 Passholders will receive an email inviting them to complete a race selection survey.

The survey will remain open for about one week and will close before race registration opens. (For Jan-March 2027 races, the survey will be sent on October 1, 2026, and close on October 8, 2026.)

Step 2: Select the Races You Want to Run

In the survey you'll:

• Confirm your eligibility
• Select at least 3 races you'll be available to run during that quarter

Step 3: Race Matching

After the survey closes, NYRR will conduct a randomized matching process to provide invitations to the races opening in the upcoming launch. Invitations to races will be allocated as follows:

• January-March: 1 race invitation
• April–June: 1 race invitation
• July–September: 2 race invitations
• October–December: 2 race invitations.

Passholders are matched to races based on:

• The Passholder’s survey selections
• Available race capacity for the races each quarter
• Once you are matched with a race you would like to run, you'll receive instructions for claiming your spot.

If you follow the guidelines for the race selection process, you will be matched to six in-person races over the course of the year. We recommend your remaining three races be the Premium tiers of 9+1-eligible virtual races:

• Virtual Resolution Run 5K
• Virtual Global Running Day 5K
• Virtual Run for Thanks 5K

These virtual races are easy to enter because they have unlimited capacity. You can proactively sign up for these virtual races on your own when they open. If you would prefer to run three in-person races to complete your nine, you can do so during any of the race registration periods. 

Once you have registered and/or completed 9 races for the calendar year, you will no longer be eligible for our Passholder Race Selection process, but you will continue to have access to member registration for races.

Step 4: Claim Your Entry

When you're matched with a race:

• You'll receive an email notification—prior to advance registration opening—with a private link to register for your race
• You must claim your entry by the claim deadline, which will be 7 days after race registration opens.
• Unclaimed entries will be forfeited.
• In addition to claiming your entry, you can register for any other open races in which you want to participate.

Volunteering (+1 credit)

Please ensure you register for a volunteer assignment as they become available in order to receive your credit. Throughout the course of the year, there will be enough volunteer spots for all in the 9+1 Pass program.
