We invite you to be part of the team of volunteer licensed medical professionals who will provide medical expertise to thousands of runners per year! You will meet great people, gain experience with event medicine, and be a part of a large community of runners.

The following volunteers are needed:

Physicians—specialists in sports medicine, emergency medicine, orthopedics, GP, cardiology, podiatry, and other areas
Physician Assistants
Nurses
Physical therapists
Occupational therapists
Psychologists and MSWs
Massage therapists
Pharmacists
EMTs and paramedics
Athletic Trainers
Medical and Nursing Students

Volunteers are accepted on a rolling basis. You will be notified by email with any application changes and updates by email. To view what opportunity qualifies as a +1 credit for the 9+1 program please look for the “9+1” icon on each listing.

How do I become a medical volunteer?

To become a medical volunteer, you must meet criteria on our Medical Volunteer Requirements page, create an NYRR profile, and upload a headshot to your NYRR account. Once you have met the above criteria visit our volunteer opportunities page and apply for your desired opportunity.

I recently applied to be a medical volunteer; how can I check the status of my application?

To view the status of your application, please log on to your NYRR account and view your volunteer commitments. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and our team must verify all licenses prior to approval. If we have any questions or issues, we will reach out to you at your NYRR account email address.

My license expires soon, and I am waiting for my renewal. Can I apply to be a volunteer?

All accepted medical volunteers must have a verified active license through the event date. If your license expires before the race you are applying for, you cannot be accepted until the license is renewed. Please apply when you have a license that is active through event day.

I am a medical student, but I do not have a CPR certification. Can I volunteer?

Currently, we require all student medical volunteers to have a CPR certification.

The volunteer opportunity I applied for requires an orientation. What if I cannot make an orientation session?

All marquee and TCS New York City Marathon medical volunteers should attend at least one mandatory orientation session. If you cannot make an orientation, please reach out to us at medical@nyrr.org

Is the orientation offered virtually?

Currently, we do not offer virtual orientation sessions.

How long are the volunteer shifts for weekly races?

Shift times for weekly races are approximately 4.5 hours.

How long are the volunteer shifts for the TCS New York City Marathon?

Shift times vary by location on the course. The TCS New York City Marathon medical volunteer shift is typically a longer time commitment. For those who want a shorter shift, please request to be stationed close to or at the start during orientation. For an idea of timing our medical tents at the finish line start to consolidate and dismiss some volunteers at the 10 hour mark.

Can I request a specific location for my volunteer shift?

You may request a specific location, and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Your placement will be determined based on your medical experience and the needs of the various medical tents. For races that require an orientation, all requests must be made after orientation, where you will receive information on how to make a request.

When will I receive my location placement for the TCS New York City Marathon?

Placements are sent out the week of the marathon, after orientation.

Can I volunteer with a group?

We love volunteer groups! If you are part of a volunteer group that is looking to be placed together, please visit our Volunteer Groups page . Groups can earn guaranteed entries to the following year’s TCS New York City Marathon. For additional information, please email medical@nyrr.org.

What do I need to bring/wear on the day of my shift?

We ask our volunteers to wear unbranded scrubs and closed-toe shoes. Please dress for the weather; you will be outside for part of the shift and our tents are not temperature controlled. On colder days please wear layers. If a T-shirt or Jacket is provided for that event, you must wear it during your shift.

Is food provided?

We provide our volunteers with a bagel breakfast and coffee when you check in. For longer days such as the TCS New York City Marathon, RBC Brooklyn Half, and United Airlines NYC Half, we will also provide a bagged lunch which includes a vegetarian option. If you have specific dietary restrictions, we ask that you bring your own food.
