NYRR Team for Climate 2025 TCS New York City Marathon

About the Project
In a continued partnership with Anew climate, a global climate solutions leader, NYRR has committed to use a portion of the funds raised by NYRR Team for Climate to purchase verified carbon credits for improved forest management projects, a practice known as carbon offsetting. NYRR has also committed to using a portion of the funds raised by NYRR Team for Climate for projects within NYRR that reduce the total emissions generated within NYRR’s events and operations, a practice known as carbon insetting.
For the carbon offsetting piece of this program, NYRR has decided to engage in four forest management projects. Two of these are projects continued from the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon, The Hartwood Forestry Project and the Eagle Mountain Forestry Project described here. The other two are new projects, described below.
100-Mile Wilderness Forestry Project
The 100-Mile Wilderness Project encompasses over 13,000 acres of northern hardwood and spruce-fir forests in Piscataquis County, Maine. Now owned and managed by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), the land is part of AMC’s broader Maine Woods Initiative, which has conserved more than 114,000 contiguous acres within the region.
Featuring rugged terrain, forested wetlands, and more than 130 miles of multi-use trails, the property offers recreational access for hiking, biking, skiing, and more, all open for public access. It also provides critical habitat for species such as the Canada lynx, moose, American marten, and the critically endangered Atlantic salmon.
By leveraging carbon finance, AMC can implement forest management strategies that go beyond standard conservation approaches, helping to secure the long-term climate and ecological value of this landscape while avoiding future pressures of commercial logging.
Empire Riverlands Forestry Project
The Empire Riverlands Project protects 47,783 acres of riparian-rich hardwood forests in New York’s western Adirondacks and Tug Hill Plateau. Acquired in 2022 by Aurora Sustainable Lands, the property marks a significant shift in land use, from historically intensive timber harvesting to forest stewardship focused on carbon sequestration and long-term sustainability.
With over 187 miles of rivers and streams flowing through its boundaries, the project supports both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, safeguarding habitat and community water resources.
Under Aurora’s management, the forest is now maintained for its climate benefits rather than short-term timber yields, an approach made possible through participation in carbon markets. This shift ensures a more durable climate outcome, preserving forest carbon stocks that might otherwise be lost under traditional land-use practices.
Sustainability Commitment
New This Year!
In an effort to reduce plastic waste, all NYRR Team for Climate will opt out of race-day baggage. All finishers still receive a reusable post-race poncho.
Additionally, in an effort to reduce textile waste, runners will be required to bring at least one gently used piece of running apparel or shoes to donate at the Expo when they pick up their race day materials. Upon registration, runners will also have an option to opt out of receiving the NYRR Team for Climate Singlet and/or the official race shirt.
Fundraising Commitment
As an NYRR Team for Climate runner, you will commit to raising a minimum of $3,000 by Wednesday, October 15, 2025. All fundraising will occur through the NYRR Team for Climate fundraising page.
