The Inspiring Return of the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon

The 2022 TCS New York City Marathon returned triumphantly to the streets of NYC for its 51st edition with 48,762 runners traversing the five boroughs, cheered on by spectators all along the route and millions of fans around the world.

This year's race marked the first full-capacity running of the TCS New York City Marathon since 2019. The in-person race was canceled in 2020 during the pandemic and had a reduced field size in 2021 due to international travel restrictions. Today’s event welcomed runners from all over the globe back to the Big Apple, and crowds turned out to support them in huge numbers, cheering, ringing cowbells, and holding hand-drawn signs.

In warm conditions, records fell in both wheelchair-division races and the open-division contests were hard-fought battles. Wheelchair winners Susannah Scaroni of the United States and Marcel Hug of Switzerland, and open winners Sharon Lokedi and Evans Chebet, both of Kenya, led the way. Read about the pro races here.

Scaroni and Hug collected course-record bonuses of $50,000 each – one of several new initiatives this year to increase equality and inclusivity at the TCS New York City Marathon. Read about these initiatives here. Scaroni scored her first TCS New York City Marathon win and Hug his fifth, joining Kurt Fearnley and Tatyana McFadden as a five-time winner.

Lokedi, running her debut marathon, won in 2:23:23 by pulling away from Lonah Chemtai Salpeter of Israel in the final mile to prevail by 7 seconds. Chebet, the 2022 Boston Marathon champion, ran a patient race, winning in 2:08:41 over Shura Kitata of Ethiopia in 2:08:54.

Youth and community runners joined in race-week celebrations, including the TCS Run with Champions featuring hundreds of Rising New York Road Runners youth participants on Thursday and the 20th anniversary of Team for Kids, NYRR’s youth and community fundraising charity, at Night of Champions on Friday.

Celebrity runners today included Ashton Kutcher, Ellie Kemper, Amy Robach, T.J. Holmes, Matt James, Tiki Barber, and Claire Holt.

The Virtual TCS New York City Marathon saw thousands of runners around the world complete their 26.2 miles from October 22 through November 6.

The TCS New York City Marathon course takes runners over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge from Staten Island to Brooklyn, then through Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and back into Manhattan to finish in Central Park. It features five bridges, diverse neighborhoods, sweeping views, and cheering crowds all along the way.

The New York City Marathon began in 1970 as four-plus loops of Central Park. Women made history in 1972 by sitting down at the start to protest unequal treatment. In 1976 the race became a five-borough event and set the blueprint for big-city marathons around the world. To date, the race has had more than 1.3 million finishers.
