The next generation of runners kicks off TCS New York City Marathon race week with a new race through Central Park featuring 1,000 kids ages 2-18 from New York City’s five boroughs, and a festival including games and activities for the whole family.
New York Road Runners distributes free New Balance running shoes to more than 400 elementary school and middle school-aged Rising New York Road Runners from across the five boroughs as they begin their running seasons. Since 2017, Rising New York Road Runners and New Balance have distributed free pairs of shoes to students at more than 1,000 underserved schools and community centers.

Bringing together past, present, and future generations of runners, student participants in Rising New York Road Runners from New York City schools take part in a series of fun running events, followed by a Q&A with Olympian Beverly Ramos, five-time TCS New York City Marathon champion and Paralympian Tatyana McFadden, and 1974 New York City Marathon champion and trailblazer Kathrine Switzer.
Members of NYRR Team for Climate – TCS New York City Marathon runners participating in honor of sustainability – meet for a plogging event with special guest Ginger Zee, Chief Meteorologist at ABC News and Chief Climate Correspondent. Plogging is a combination of “jogging” and “plocka upp,” the Swedish term for “picking up.”
Thousands of runners from around the world – including participants from New York Road Runners’ community programs and local run clubs – parade across the TCS New York City Marathon finish line to kick off race weekend with a celebration that includes the 2024 NYRR Hall of Fame inductees and concludes with fireworks. TCS New York City Marathon Grand Marshal and five-time Olympic medalist Gabby Thomas will welcome runners to the festivities. The 26 members of Team Inspire – a diverse group of athletes with the most compelling stories at the TCS New York City Marathon – will be available for a photo opportunity.
Highlighted by the 2024 USATF 5K Championships, the professional field will be joined by thousands of runners of all ages from around the world in a race through midtown, from the United Nations on East 42nd Street to the finish line of the TCS New York City Marathon in Central Park.
