New York, October 9, 2024 — New York Road Runners (NYRR) will celebrate Staten Island, the TCS New York City Marathon’s first borough, with more than 9,000 runners Sunday, October 13 at the sold-out NYRR Staten Island Half, the nonprofit’s premier event in the borough and one of the 60 adult and youth races it produces annually.

Part of the New York Road Runners Five-Borough Series, the NYRR Staten Island Half has taken place for nearly 37 years and is used by runners as preparation for the TCS New York City Marathon, which famously starts on Staten Island, November 3.  Boasting views of New York Harbor and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, the NYRR Staten Island Half showcases the borough’s beauty and diversity.

“With three weeks until the TCS New York City Marathon, the NYRR Staten Island Half serves as a precursor of the enthusiasm, excitement, and anticipation Staten Island always brings to the marathon course,” said Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of New York Road Runners. “New York Road Runners is eager to inspire future TCS New York City Marathon runners as over a hundred kids of all abilities from across New York City will lace up at the inaugural Rising NYRR at the Staten Island Half youth races.”

New York Road Runners engages community members of all ages and abilities on Staten Island through free and accessible programming year-round. Among the programs: Rising New York Road Runners, a free youth running-based program serving more than 4,000 Staten Island students in the 2023-2024 school year, NYRR Open Run offering free weekly runs and walks at Conference House Park with more than 50 regular participants, and NYRR Striders, a fitness program for older adults serving more than 20 at two sites. Nearly 1,000 runners from Staten Island took part in NYRR races in 2023, and the borough includes more than 800 NYRR members.
