Vivian Cheruiyot, a four-time Olympic and seven-time World Championships medalist, will return to the United Airlines NYC Half for the first time since a DNF in 2018. Cheruiyot reached the TCS New York City Marathon podium in 2024 and 2018.
After taking three-year maternity break, she made a strong comeback in 2023 and continued to progress in 2024, racking up several podium finishes, including silver at the Kilimanjaro Half Marathon, bronze at the Paris Marathon, and bronze at the TCS New York City Marathon.
In 2018, she was the winner of the London Marathon, breaking the tape in 2:18:31, and was the runner-up the following year. The same year, she also won the Great North Run, crossing the finish line in 1:07:43.
One of the most accomplished distance runners in history, she won gold in the 5,000 meters at the World Athletics Championships in 2009 and 2011, and the 10,000 meters in 2011 and 2015. She has competed in four Olympics, capturing silver in the 5,000 and bronze in the 10,000 at the 2012 London Olympics before winning gold in the 5,000 one week after taking silver in the 10,000 at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her time of 29:32.53 in the 10,000 meters was less than one second behind the previous world record.
Shortly after switching to the roads, Cheruiyot won the 2018 London Marathon on a hot day just a year after making her marathon debut with a fourth-place finish in 2017. She also finished as the runner-up at the 2019 London Marathon and won the 2017 Frankfurt Marathon.
