Susannah Scaroni
Susannah Scaroni is a force to be reckoned with in New York, with five victories in the Mastercard New York Mini 10K, three in the United Airlines NYC Half, and two in the TCS New York City Marathon. After back-to-back wins in the United Airlines NYC Half, she is in search of a three-peat.
In 2022, Scaroni won her first TCS New York City Marathon title, breaking the tape in 1:42:43 to beat the previous course record of 1:43:04 set by Tatyana McFadden in 2015. She returned to the top of the podium in 2024, making history with Daniel Romanchuk to become the first American duo to sweep the wheelchair division in event history. Scaroni won by more than 10 minutes, one of the largest margins in event history.
In total, Scaroni has been on the podium 18 times at Abbott World Marathon Major races, with titles in Chicago and Boston.
At the Paris 2024 Paralympics, she won silver in the 5,000 meters and took bronze in the 800 meters, 1,500 meters, and marathon. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Scaroni won gold in the 5,000 meters and bronze in the 800 meters. However, a month later, she collided with a car while training on the roads in Illinois, suffering a fracture in her vertebrae that sidelined her from competition for the rest of the year. A test of her resilience and strength, she returned fully healthy a year later in 2022 to win her fourth Mastercard New York Mini 10K in a world-best time of 21:10, then went on to break the 5,000-meter world record, win Grandma’s Marathon in a world-best time of 1:27:31, and win the Peachtree Road Race 10K in a new course record.
Scaroni was raised in Tekoa, Wash., and attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a masters in nutritional science. She is now a registered dietitian and still bases her training in Champaign with the university’s highly successful wheelchair athletics program. She has previously served as an ambassador for NYRR Run for the Future, a free six-week program that introduces high school young women to running, fitness, and overall wellness.
