Hellen Obiri
Hellen Obiri is a three-time Olympic medalist, seven-time world championships medalist, and the only woman in history to win world titles in indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country. She is the defending champion in three New York Road Runners races—the Mastercard New York Mini 10K, the United Airlines NYC Half, and the TCS New York City Marathon. She also holds the event record in both the United Airlines NYC Half and the TCS New York City Marathon.
In 2022, in her marathon debut, Obiri finished sixth at the TCS New York City Marathon. The following year she went on a tear, winning the Ras al Khaimah Half Marathon, United Airlines NYC Half, Boston Marathon, and Beach to Beacon 10K, and then closed out the year with a TCS New York City Marathon title. She unleashed a kick in the final 400 meters in Central Park to become the first woman in 34 years to win both the Boston and New York City marathons in the same calendar year. A few months later in April 2024, she became the first woman since 2005 to repeat as the Boston Marathon champion.
In 2024 she secured bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympic Marathon followed by a runner-up performance at the TCS New York City Marathon. In April 2025, she battled Sharon Lokedi at the Boston Marathon and finished as the runner-up behind Lokedi’s event record. She returned to New York in June to claim the 2025 Mastercard New York Mini 10K title, completing a trifecta of New York City victories.
Most recently, she broke the TCS New York City Marathon tape in a new event record of 2:19:51, broke the course record at the United Airlines NYC Half in 1:06:33, and placed runner-up in the TCS London Marathon in a new personal best of 2:15:53.
Obiri represented Kenya at the last three Olympics, earning silver medals in the 5,000 meters at both the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Games and a bronze in the marathon in 2024 in Paris. In Tokyo, she was also fourth in the 10,000 meters. She has competed at the World Athletics Championships since 2011—winning bronze in the 1,500 meters in 2013, gold in the 5,000 meters in both 2017 and 2019, and silver in the 10,000 meters in 2022.
