Daniel Romanchuk USA

Daniel Romanchuk returns to the New York City roads he knows so well as he returns from a shoulder injury he sustained in August during the Sydney Marathon. In April 2025 he finished as the runner-up in the Boston Marathon in 1:25:58.

Before getting injured, he made history with Susannah Scaroni to become the first Americans to sweep the wheelchair division at the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. It was his third TCS New York City Marathon victory, after winning back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. When he won the 2018 TCS New York City Marathon edition, Romanchuk became the first American and youngest athlete ever to win the men’s wheelchair division. He has finished on the United Airlines NYC Half podium five times, winning it twice.

In 2024, Romanchuk added more accolades to his resume, finishing as the runner-up at the Boston Marathon and capturing two medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympics — a gold in the 5,000 meters and a bronze in the marathon.

Growing up in Maryland, Romanchuk discovered his passion for wheelchair racing with the Bennett Blazers, the same adaptive sports club where Paralympic legends Tatyana McFadden and Josh George began their careers. At 16, Romanchuk began training for the 2016 Rio Paralympics under coach Adam Bleakney, who leads the esteemed University of Illinois wheelchair racing program.

Beyond his athletic pursuits, Romanchuk loves math, numbers, and finding out how things work—he would disassemble and reassemble toasters as a kid—and now studies engineering in hopes of helping make advancements for racing chairs.

He is the founder of Wheels for Change, a nonprofit that provides access to wheelchair racing equipment for those interested in the sport, helping to foster the next generation of wheelchair athletes.  Last year, Wheels for Change supported four athletes from Ghana who participated in the first West Africa Para Athletics Championships in Nigeria.
