Cam Levins
Cam Levins, a two-time Olympian, will be making his TCS New York City Marathon debut after breaking the North American record in the marathon in March at the Tokyo Marathon. Levins finished fifth overall in a time of 2:05:36 in Tokyo, taking two seconds off the previous regional record. One month prior to that, Levins broke Ben Flanagan’s Canadian record in the half marathon en route to winning the First Half in Vancouver in 1:00:18.
Last year, Levins finished fourth in the World Athletics Championships Marathon in 2:07:09, which at the time was a Canadian record; it was also the best Canadian finish ever in the event.
Levins first became the Canadian record holder in the marathon when he ran a 2:09:25 in his debut at the 2018 Toronto Waterfront Marathon. He broke Jerome Drayton’s 43-year-old Canadian men’s record by 44 seconds.
Previously, Levins competed in the 5,000 and 10,000-meter events at the London 2012 Olympics, finishing 14th and 10th, respectively, despite catching the flu. He posted Canada’s best result in the men’s 10,000 meters at the Olympics since 1932. That same year, he became the first Canadian to receive the Bowerman Award, the NCAA’s annual award given to the most outstanding collegiate athlete in track and field, after capturing the NCAA 5,000- and 10,000-meter titles his senior season.
In 2014, Levins captured bronze in the 10,000 meters at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics after struggling with injuries.
Growing up, Levins’ older brother Jordan was also a runner and he wanted to do whatever he did. He has been running on the track since second grade and when he began running on forest trails, his mother ensured he avoided running them when cougar and bear sightings were posted in Canada. Levins graduated from Southern Utah University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in physical education.
