Belay Tilahun
Belay Tilahun won his New York City racing debut at the 2019 United Airlines NYC Half, taking the tape in 1:02:10 after overtaking Eritrea’s Daniel Mesfun in the home stretch. His win was a surprise after he entered into the race via his club and was not part of the professional athlete field.
Tilahun has a half-marathon personal-best of 1:01:51 from the 2016 Valencia Half Marathon and a 10,000-meter personal best of 27:11.63 from that same year. He has also won the New Year’s Eve Sao Silvestre 15K race in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is one of the oldest, largest, and most famous races in South America.
To kick off his 2020 season, Tilahun ran a personal-best 2:13:32 marathon in Houston in January, finishing in sixth place.
